日本語Study While on Vacation

Welcome to LA!

For the past few days I have been in Los Angeles California for my late summer vacation.  I have been on a roll with studying Japanese (ie. Listening to audio like songs and podcasts, watching Doramas, educational videos on Youtube and reading Japanese blogs, tweets, books, and manga) during any free time that I have. I realized though I will probably not do so much of that during my vacation.  Although it was only 2 days worth of actual vacation I did not want to fall back on my momentum.  Now I still enjoyed my vacation to the fullest but I still had to find some way to put Japanese in my fun days.  As I continue with how I studied (actively and inactively) on my trip I will also express how I felt about it.

My trip started Thursday.  I left my apartment at 5pm to go to the airport and from there I waited 4 hours for my flight.  It was suppose to be 2 hours but there were delays which ended up making my time at the airport longer.  It was only more time for me to study Japanese though so I wasn’t totally upset.  Below is what my days looked like:

Thursday
Subway ride to airport (1hr ride); listened to Japanese music
At the airport waiting for flight (4hr wait); listened to Japanese music, read Tae Kim’s Grammar guide, tweeted in Japanese a little
On the plane (5hr straight flight); worked on Tae Kim’s Grammar guide, watched episode of 接待彼氏 (Absolute Boyfriend), tried to sleep afterwards
Ride to cousin’s house (45min ride); no Japanese
Sleep

Friday
Woke up early due to cousin needing to go to work (7am!)
Was dropped off at Hollywood Blvd to do my own sightseeing (8am!!)
Had breakfast listened to Japanese music
Walked around Hollywood Blvd till 10am (feet got soooo tired)
Sat in Starbuck till noon; watched an episode of ランチの子王 (Lunch Queen)
Rest of day went on a tour bus; listened to J-music most of the time on low in one ear
Got ready for dinner; blasted Japanese music for my cousin to hear.  He liked a few songs
Went to Little Tokyo for dinner 楽しい!; almost ordered in Japanese lol
Watched episode of Lunch Queen

Saturday
Woke up early to walk the Hollywood Mountains 本当に楽しい!;no Japanese learning here
Ate at famous Roscoe’s Chicken n Waffles; kept saying うまい and おいしい(笑)
Went to Venice Beach, Santa Monica, had Pinkberry in LA, then went to see Takers in a nice movie theater in the Valley; no Japanese  After full day of exploring went back to apartment; watched episode of 絶対彼氏 (Absolute Boyfriend) and ランチの子王 (Lunch Queen)
Finished ランチの子王
Packed went to sleep

Sunday
Woke up 9am got ready to go to airport
At airport waiting for flight; watched 絶対彼氏 (Absolute Boyfriend)
In flight; listening to J-music and doing Tae Kim’s Grammar Guide (finally getting a sense of を and が particles)

As you can see I didn’t do too much active study but when I had the chance I listened to Japanese audio.  I treated myself to Japanese dramas (with subtitles) but made sure I listened and not just read the English.  I know watching dramas with no English subtitles will help me with my listening but I’m ALL about the story and since I don’t fully understand what I’m listening to yet I prefer the subtitles.  I listen to enough non subtitled audio on my iPod for practice.  Subtitled dramas are my cookies for the day.  I had a little bit more cookies these past few days but, hey! it was my vacation.  I can do that.

Since I’m all about watching dramas (old and new, mainly old though) I will give you a short review of Lunch Queen.  I loved it till the end.  It almost gave me the same feeling I got when I was watching ProDai (till I saw the Special) but not too much.  That feeling was frustration.  I don’t like sucky endings.  This one wasn’t too bad but it was bad enough for me to say I liked the drama but the ending was blah!  That’s the end of my review lol.  I’m am still watching Absolute Boyfriend but will be done with it very soon.  I started a list of the dramas I will be watching next (still hasn’t been written down though lol) and will continue to post about them and the words that pop up that end up sticking in my head. Speaking of words, the word that has stuck in my head now is すべて.  I kept hearing that word in a NEWS song so I finally looked it up and now know what it means (means “all” ).

I give you this Elephant

As I follow the AJATT way (or my form of it) I notice the little things that I do remember.  Nothing ever too big nothing ever too small but enough for me to realize that I am remembering things in the Japanese language and it motivates me to go on.  I had one frustrating night but out of 8 months one night is minute (pronounced my-noot lol English is funny and I don’t know why that word popped in my head to use) or in other words tiny compared to other people who may just give up.  I do have Yamapi to look forward to meeting (ha that’ll be the day) and I want to know how to speak Japanese by the time that happens (if ever).  So my vacation studying was OK.  I had to enjoy my time in LA so Saturday was the least amount of Japanese and I felt almost naked.  I’ve been trying to expose myself with Japanese for every free minute that I have.  Even at work at times I sneak on my headphones to listen to the sweat sounds of NEWS, TegoMasu, Yamapi, Daichi, Crystal Kay, Arashi, ect.  And if not that I try to write things too.  I will write up an entry on exactly what I do to study Japanese.  Mind you though, I change it up almost daily.  I will just sum up the things I have around that I can use on different days.  Only thing that matters is that I expose myself to the language.  Doesn’t matter how just need to DO it.  Thanks Khatzumoto!
